The effects of pond algae and keeping it under control

Pond algae, when allowed to build up too much in ponds, can not only make your pond look unsightly, it can also damage your pond and pose a serious risk to the health of your aquatic life through deoxygenation of the water. 

That’s not to say there aren’t benefits of pond algae, it makes a good food source for fish and other pond creatures, but when the levels get out of control, it can leave you with an incredibly unhealthy pond. 

There are lots of different types of pond algae which can affect your pond - hundreds, in fact.  Causes of pond algae include too much organic debris or fertilisers being allowed to get into the water, while excessively sunny pond sites and newly filled ponds can be most susceptible to its growth.

Algae treatments - why do you need them?

As with pond pumps, filters and ultra violet clarifiers, algae treatments are not essential. 

However, we find if a client is employing the three-stage pond filtration system then monthly use of a range of algae treatments goes an incredibly long way to achieving a gin-clear pond. 

The specific treatment and quantity may vary considerably depending on a whole number of factors. Treatments for blanket weed, we find, tend to be the most required.

Pond algae treatment and control 

Pulling out the pond algae can often only be a temporary solution, as if the condition of your pond isn’t right, chances are it will only grow back. 

Ways in which many people believe they can discourage its growth is through the addition of barley straw to the water’s surface or by using certain pond algae treatments. You could also consider having a water feature added to aerate the stagnant water. These are, however, not a permanent fix.
